09/14/2014
If you are currently in the process of raising a child with ADHD you know that it can be rather difficult to capture and keep their attention. It may also seem that doing some of the simplest tasks take much longer than expected. 28% of children between the ages of 3 and 17 have been diagnosed with ADHD, and the numbers are growing. Though there are numerous resources out there for you and your child, you might feel overwhelmed while looking. It is with this in mind that The Tutoring Center in Sugar Land wishes to make it a bit easier for you, by providing just a few tips to help ensure your child and you, are happy and healthy in the home.

Structure and Routine

Of course, structure and Routine are attributes that can benefit all children, but for those with ADHD, who have more difficulty displaying self-control and focus, they are absolutely essential. External controls are a must. Be positive and clear in stating your expectations for your child, as well as setting up times for each activity.

Healthy Living

A healthy lifestyle is certainly going to help your child with his/her ADHD. Through your example of healthy living, your child benefit greatly. Here are three areas in which you can help your child to become more healthy!

Exercise and Play
Physical activity that your child enjoys is certainly recommended. This does not necessarily mean that your child must be involved in organized sports, but that he or she is able to spend time in play and movement.

Eating Well
Low sugar, balanced diets are going to be essential to improve brain function.

Sleeping Well
It is not as simple as giving your child a bedtime and maintaining a sleeping schedule. You should sit down with your child to discover what allows him/her to sleep the best. Ask questions about whether they prefer complete darkness or a nightlight? Will a fan help them to drown out other noise as they sleep? Do they prefer a hard or soft mattress? One pillow or two? These things can affect the way adults sleep, in this respect children are not much different.

Once you have begun to see results, keeping in mind that it will take a bit longer than it would with a child who does not have ADHD, you may realize it is time to focus on some of the academic problems your child is experiencing.
