As a student, you know what your strengths are and what areas you need to work on in order to improve. However, if you are reaching the point in which you need to take your SAT/ACT tests, you should to make it a priority to brush up on your skills so you can do well and reach the scores you need.

With this in mind, The Tutoring Center in Sugar Land would like to offer a helping hand with your reading portion of the tests; which is why in this post, we’ll provide a few tips on how you can improve your reading comprehension.

How to Improve Your Reading Comprehension

Read

First and foremost, you need to read more. By doing so you’ll be practicing your reading comprehension skills. If you want to create a reading habit, choose material that speaks to your interests, and that suits your age and reading level.

Work on Your Focus

Improving your concentration can have a real effect on how well you understand what you’re reading. Try your best to avoid distractions, and set achievable goals for your reading sessions so you can stay motivated.

Take Notes

A great tip in order to stay on top of the text you’re going through is to take notes as you read. Document important information, names, dates, and/or plot points to have a better grasp of your reading material.

Use a Dictionary

Vocabulary is an important part of reading comprehension since being able to understand the words that you’re reading gives you a better idea of the overall message. Read, and whenever you find a new word, use your dictionary to find its definition.

Do Practice Runs

As you know, practice makes perfection, and if you want to get better in reading comprehension, you will need to do some practice runs. You can look for worksheets and examples online with questions you can answer in order to better your skills.

Use Different Strategies

Practice a few different strategies before your tests to become a better reader and score the points you need. For example, reading out loud can help you ensure that you won’t skip through your text. Likewise, avoid moving forward until you understand what you just read.

Discuss

Simply talking about about a book you read can give you a new perspective and understanding on it. Discuss your reading material with your peers, teachers, friends or relatives to make your reading experience more enriching.
