Useful Study Tips for the School Year

Although it feels like the school year just started, exams are right around the corner. To help your child prepare for important tests, follow these tips from The Tutoring Center, Sugar Land TX.

Avoid Procrastination

Most students will fall victims to procrastination at least once during their academic career. Putting off studying or completing work until the last minute may allow you to relax and keep your mind off of school for longer, but it will leave you in a tough situation. Putting off studying for an important exam until the day before will likely leave you overwhelmed and wishing you had started studying sooner. You probably won't have enough time to properly revise all of the material, leaving you less than prepared for your exam. Avoid falling into the procrastination trap and instead, figure out why you're doing it. It a task is quite large and intimidating, break it down into smaller assignments. If you're having trouble understanding a lesson, ask for help. Whatever the issue is, there is always a solution.

Schedule Regular Study Time

Instead of leaving your studying for a few days or a week before an exam, take care of it over a longer span of time. This is easy to accomplish by making a study schedule that allows you to set aside time every day to review notes and ensure that you understood your lessons. Setting aside an hour or two daily for this will help ensure that you really learn the material and don't just memorize it for your test. This will also reduce the amount of time you have to spend studying the days before your test. By doing this, you will be more confident in your abilities and less stressed about your upcoming test.

Create a Study Space

Having a designated study area in your home can significantly improve your study time. Choose a room in your home where you can work with minimal distractions. Ideally, this space should be one that is quiet, well-lit, and at a comfortable temperature. Distractions, such as other people and electronics, should be a distance away. The space should have a comfortable chair and adequate desk space for you to work comfortably. Avoid working on your bed or on the couch as these spaces will be too comfortable and not conducive to studying. Lastly, ensure you have the necessary supplies to get your studying done without having to get up and get distracted. Set Study Goals

Before starting your study sessions, always come up with a few goals that you would like to accomplish. By setting goals you will have something specific to work towards and not just study aimlessly. To make this even more effective, set time limits for your goals that will encourage you to work more efficiently. For example, if you're studying for a math exam and need to memorize some formulas, make it a goal to memorize a certain amount of the formulas by a certain time. You can also set rewards for each goal you accomplish to keep you motivated. If you have a chalkboard or whiteboard in your study area, write down your goals and cross them off as they get accomplished so you can see your progress.

Take Better Class Notes

Your class notes are a great tool when it comes to studying for exams. To make them an even more effective tool, be sure you're taking the best notes possible. Your notes should be concise, to the point, and not too wordy. Write down important dates, names, places, and keywords that will be helpful as you study. You can also use highlighters or colored pens to color code you notes. Highlighting or underlining the most important points will help them stand out as you study, helping you concentrate on what matters most.

Take Advantage of Study Material You Already Have

Just like your class notes are a great study tool, so are your old exams and assignments. Instead of tossing these old papers, hold onto them and use them to study. Old exams will help you get comfortable with a teacher's exam style as well as help you review important test material. You can use these and old assignments to create flashcards to help you study or even quiz your friends with old test questions.
