Make Your Child's Transition Back to School Easier

Most children look forward to the return of school because it means seeing their friends, making new friends, and taking part in fun activities. Even though they look forward to some parts of school, other aspects of their return to school may be a bit rough. To help your child make a smooth transition back to school this year, follow these tips from The Tutoring Center, Sugar Land TX.

Get Organized

To start the school year off on the right track, help your child stay organized. Developing better organization habits takes time, so start your child off with a calendar and a day planner where they can keep track of important dates, homework assignments, exams, and deadlines. Get your child in the habit of using these even before the school year starts. Write down their school registration date and other important back to school tasks, such as immunization appointments and back to school shopping plans. Other things that can help them stay organized are file folders where they can keep important documents and school related items.

Set School Year Goals

Setting goals before the school year starts can help your child stay on the right track and productive this year. Sit down with your child and discuss what it is they want to get out of this year and what they would like to accomplish. Their goals can range from ideal grades to sports teams they would like to join. Whatever they decide they want to accomplish, start planning how they will get there. Teach your child about long-term goals as well as short-term goals. Finally, develop strategies that will help them reach their goals and make a step by step plan to get there.

Practice School Year Routines

Summer break allows students to distance themselves from their school routine. While this break is necessary, it is important that they get back into the groove of things once the new school year is approaching. Start by setting a bedtime that will allow them to get enough sleep each night. Once you have the bedtime set, help your child develop a bedtime routine that will allow them to get to bed on time each night. To make your child's mornings less stressful, develop a morning routine as well. Their morning routine should start with a reasonable time for them to get up that allows them to comfortable shower, get ready, eat breakfast, and brush their teeth before heading out the door. This will help reduce stress and make mornings run smoother. Create a Homework Space

Some students may struggle to get back in the habit of completing homework and studying for exams. To make this easier for your child, create a homework space in your house that encourages productivity. Create the homework space in a quiet, well-lit room that is a distance away from distractions. Give your child a comfortable chair and a large enough workspace where they won't feel cramped. Lastly, stock the space with basic school supplies that will limit how often your child has to get up to look for items.

Figure Out Your Child's Learning Style

Knowing what learning style applies to your child is a great way to help them learn more effectively and efficiently this school year. There are seven main learning styles, each with their own techniques that make learning easier. It's important to keep in mind that your child may not fall into only one style, but may actually have characteristics that apply to a couple. Once you figure out what techniques suit your child best, develop strategies that will make their learning more effective.

Encourage Your Child to Get Involved

When we think of school we tend to focus on what goes on in the classroom, but there is so much more to it than that. Most schools offer an array of extracurricular activities that encourage learning outside of the classroom as well as the chance to develop new relationships. Encouraging your child to take part in an extracurricular activity is a great way to help them develop important skills outside of the classroom and find new interests.
