Keep Your Child Learning This Winter Break

Winter break is your child's time to relax and take a break from their stressful school routine. It's important that they get some downtime to wind down and destress, but keeping their mind engaged is also a must. Instead of having them do practice lessons in their textbooks, keep them academically active with these tips.

Make Time for Reading

Reading is a fun activity your child likely already enjoys, so having it be part of their winter break may not be a huge struggle. Designate a silent reading time all members of your family can participate in during your child's winter break. Let everyone choose their own reading material so that it's more fun. If your child is just learning to read, set some time aside to help them practice their reading skills.

Sneak in Some Math Practice

Telling your child to practice their math lessons may result in nothing. Most children don't enjoy math, so they may not be the most motivated to actually practice it during their time away from school. If this is the case in your household, look for ways to sneak in some basic math practice. Baking and cooking are good ways to encourage math practice. You can also get your child to help you wrap gifts, which will also put their measuring skills to the test. Fun math games and apps are also great for long road trips or shopping trips.

Practice Writing Skills

Writing is often forgotten when it comes to practicing school skills at home. This winter break, have your child become a better writer by encouraging them to keep a journal full of their best short stories, diary entries, or whatever else they want to write about. You can also get them to practice letter writing skills by having them help you write thank-you notes and holiday cards for your loved ones.
